I somehow managed to finagle my way into the Call of Duty: World at War beta. I've played a few hours of the muliplayer and although it has a few new teaks and touches it still feels like COD4 in a World War II wrapper. I'm sure for plenty of people thats all fine and dandy, but with the title wave of great new games hitting stores soon, I don't want to pay money for a game I've really already played. I mean its a lot of fun to play a World War II style COD game based off of the new engine, but it doesn't really do enough new to warrant a purchase.
I'll definitely be picking it up for a rental because the 4 player co-op sounds like a lot of fun, but I mean once I beat that I probably won't want to play it again. When it comes to games I'll play the campaign mode around two times if its good, but after that I rely on multiplayer to give a game longevity. Games with great online play are the games I purchase, whereas campaign oriented games are usually rentals only. Games like COD4, Gears of War, Ghost Recon have given me hours upon hours of online fun.
On the other hand you have games like Bioshock and The Darkness. Phenomenal one player games in their own right, but in the case of Bioshock there was no multiplayer and with the Darkness it just had terrible multiplayer. Two very memorable games, but a rental period is really all I needed to get the maximum amount of enjoyment from them.
